Adelie Penguins
(Pygoscelis adeliae)
Adelie penguins are the smallest species of penguins living on the Anarctic continent. They are about 28 inches tall and weigh 8 to 9 pounds. Adelie penguins were named after the wife of a French explorer in the 1830s. Adelie penguins nest on rocky, ice-free beaches in colonies of ten thousands of birds. Adelie penguins are one of the stiff-tailed penguins with long tail feathers that drag the ground when they walk. They have a white belly with a black head and back. They have a white ring around the eye. Feathers cover most of their short beak.
